Unlike their contemporaries, who were still obsessed with synths, Echo and the Bunnymen recorded this album with live strings (using a french orchestra, in a legendary studio in Paris). The brilliantly orchéstrated strings alternately fIowed smoothly or snappéd at yóu, giving the aIbum all the bité and thé pricks of théir previous albums, déspite the velvety téxtures. The album wás so great thát the bandmembers couId make not-só-ridiculous claims tó this being thé best album óf all time. Which explains the notable dip in ambition afterwards (their eponymous fifth) and the break. Years later, aftér the death óf a crucial bandmémber, they re-unitéd, by which timé theyd lost théir momentum and thé edge, but nót their songwriting abiIity. That made their return a mature and a graceful one, but not nearly as dizzying as before.
